Checking Your T-money Card Balance in Korea

A practical guide for foreign visitors, Korean adoptees, and returning travelers

A physical T-money card works independently of the official mobile T-money service. You do not need access to the official app simply to use the card or check its balance.

Balance-Checking Apps

These verified store listings can read supported physical T-money cards on compatible NFC phones. They are unofficial third-party tools and are not affiliated with Tmoney.

iPhone

K-Card Reader
Read a supported physical T-money card balance with a compatible iPhone. Get K-Card Reader on the App Store (opens in a new tab).

Samsung & Android

Korea Transit Card Balance
Check a supported physical T-money card balance using NFC on compatible Samsung Galaxy and Android phones. Get Korea Transit Card Balance on Google Play (opens in a new tab).

These apps are for balance reading; do not assume they can recharge a card. Review each current store listing, device compatibility, privacy information, and any purchases before installing.

The Most Accessible Options

If a phone does not read your card, these options are usually the simplest:

  • Ask at a convenience store that handles T-money, including CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, or emart24.
  • Use a subway ticket or card-recharge machine. Insert or place the card as directed, then choose the balance or recharge screen. Many station machines offer English.
  • Look at the transit reader while tapping in or out. Readers commonly show the remaining stored balance after the fare is deducted.
  • Ask at a subway station service counter when one is available.

Checking with an iPhone

NFC-capable iPhones may read supported physical Korean transportation cards through a compatible card-reading app. Compatibility is not universal.

  1. Install and open a compatible transit-card reader.
  2. Select its card-reading or scan function.
  3. Hold the physical T-money card near the upper back of the iPhone.
  4. Keep the card still until the balance appears.
  5. If it is not detected, move the card slightly and remove a thick phone case.

Use K-Card Reader, linked in the Balance-Checking Apps section above. Its listing says it cannot recharge or modify cards.

Checking with Android

NFC-equipped Android phones may also read supported physical T-money cards with a compatible transit-card balance reader.

  1. Turn on NFC in the phone’s settings.
  2. Open a compatible card-reading app and start its scan function.
  3. Hold the card against the NFC antenna area on the back of the phone.
  4. Move it slightly if necessary, then keep it still until the balance appears.

Use Korea Transit Card Balance, linked in the Balance-Checking Apps section above. Settings names and NFC antenna locations vary by manufacturer and model, so check the phone maker’s instructions if you cannot find the NFC setting or scanning area.

At a Convenience Store

  1. Take the physical card to the counter at CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, or emart24.
  2. Ask the staff member to check the T-money balance.
  3. Place the card on the reader when asked.
  4. Confirm the displayed or spoken balance before deciding whether to recharge.

Korean: 티머니 카드 잔액 확인해 주세요.
English: “Please check the balance on my T-money card.”
Romanization: Timeoni kadeu janaek hwaginhae juseyo.

At a Subway Station

  1. Find a ticket-vending or transportation-card recharge machine.
  2. Select English if the option is available.
  3. Place the card on the marked reader and follow the on-screen balance or recharge prompts.
  4. If you need help, ask at a station service or customer-safety counter when one is staffed.

Checking the amount stored on the card does not require you to add money. Review the screen before confirming any recharge.

Troubleshooting and Limitations

  • The phone must support NFC, and NFC must be enabled when the device provides a setting for it.
  • Compatibility varies by phone, app, operating-system version, and transportation-card type.
  • Thick cases, metal accessories, or other cards can interfere with scanning.
  • The correct scan position differs between phones; move the card slowly across the upper, middle, or lower back.
  • Balance checking and recharging are different functions. A reader app may only display information.
  • Do not assume a third-party app can recharge a T-money card. Follow only the functions clearly documented by its current developer listing.
  • App availability and transportation services can change. Verify current information before relying on a particular app or location.

Official Information and Third-Party Tools

Visit the official Tmoney website (opens in a new tab) for current card and service information. The Korea Tourism Organization transportation-card guide (opens in a new tab) also lists current retail and subway access points.

Phone-reading apps are third-party tools unless their listing explicitly identifies Tmoney as the developer. Haneul is not affiliated with Tmoney or the third-party app named in this guide. This page was reviewed on August 11, 2026.
